About the Book
Curiosity is a basic human trait, and we often are attracted to those things we cannot quite make out.
With this in mind, photographer Alice Grebanier constructed her series, “As Seen Through a Veil:
The Obscured View” to explore the effect of various visual barriers on our perception of the hidden
thing. Semi-sheer drapes, wet windows, mesh fabric covering construction sites, mist rising from hot
springs, cracked glass turning the view into a mosaic…these are all examples of the “veils” she used
to capture the mysterious transformation of a scene by an intervening, semi-opaque material. The
follow up question remains, “And how clear is our vision even when there is no obvious veil?”
