About the Book
San Ignacio Lagoon is a magical place, where one can sit on shore and watch whales spouting in the lagoon or 'spyhopping'. On a calm night, when the wind doesn't blow, one can lie in one's tent and hear whales exhaling out in the lagoon. This book contains photos from two trips taken to San Ignacio Lagoon with Baja Discovery Tours where we were fortunate to meet some of the famous friendly whales of San Ignacio.
This key breeding lagoon for the whales has been threatened by development in recent years. Fortunately, Mexico announced in March 2007 that 109,000 acres of federal lands surrounding the lagoon would be donated for conservation -- the land where Mitsubishi had planned to build key parts of a salt works that would have had devastating effects on the lagoon environment. However, the Lagoon remains vulnerable -- there are 750,000 acres left to protect. The Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC), Pronatura, Wildcoast and Ejido leaders are working to establish a conservation easement to protect the remaining lagoon land.
Five dollars from the sale of each book will go to this effort and the San Ignacio Whale Conservation Campaign. To for more information and to donate more to the effort, google "San Ignacio Whale Conservation Campaign."
