About the Book
If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, where does self-worth reside? This was the central question behind UGLY ME, a multi-media sound installation that explored the interplay between appearance and self-worth through fashion photography, selfies and spoken prose. The spoken-word installation included twelve poems collected in this chapbook, which played as a backdrop to dozens of comical personal images and large-scale typographic collage. UGLY ME was displayed in Seattle’s Jack Straw New Media Gallery in July and August 2015.

Gabriela is the author of “CivitaVeritas: An Italian Fellowship Journey.” A writer of essays and fiction, Gabriela’s work explores the intersection of family, identity, sexuality, aging and gender; off the page, she transforms story into experience. In 2014, she staged A Novel Performance, a month-long installation during which she wrote a novel as a live performance in Seattle’s Central Library. In 2015, she opened UGLY ME, a multi-media installation that explored concepts of self and beauty at Jack Straw’s New Media Gallery. An alumna of Artist Trust’s EDGE Development program, her work is supported by residencies, grants and fellowships from Vermont Studio Center, Mineral School, the Northwest Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in Italy, Invoking the Pause, 4Culture and Jack Straw.
