About the Book
The book is an illustrated monograph in landscape format that is an overview of the life and times of William Griffith Trethewey Canada's" Silver King". It was on his farm in Mt. Dennis Weston, Ontario that the Toronto Air Meet of 1910 took place. It was during this gathering of world class aviators that Count Jacques de Lesseps was the first pilot to fly around the City of Toronto in his Bleriot XI Monoplane, la Scarabee The same airfield became the first assembly site for the newly formed de Havilland Canada in March 1928. Finally, This airfield known as Trethewey field and alternatively as de Lesseps Field was the original airfield of the RCAF "City of Toronto Squadron" formed in 1932, it would become the 10/110th Squadron and finally the 400th. Squadron in 1941. It was the first RCAF Squadron dispatched overseas in WW2.
Today the RCAF 400th Squadron is a Tactical Helicopter Squadron based at Camp Borden, Ontario.
The Trethewey Model Farm site will have a Heritage Toronto Plaque unveiled on July 15, 2017 in recognition of the historic aviation activities that occurred here starting well over a century ago!
