About the Book
'Fred's Boys' is a collection of reminiscences written by the pupils and staff of the Kings School Canterbury from 1935 to 1962 -
Life in the classroom, on the games field, in the house, and the Cathedral. Memories now told some 50-60 years later of influential and eccentric masters, of music, drama, the war, of punishments and food ! Contributions to the book come from over 100 Old Kings Scholars who were under the headmastership of Canon F. J. Shirley usually known as “Fred”.
REVIEWS OF FRED'S BOYS:
I am now a very happy owner of a copy of Fred’s boys. Many congratulations on the concept and getting it all done. I immediately had a quick look at comments made by my contemporaries in Luxmoore, which brought back many happy memories and in one case – the jazz band, something I had forgotten. Great stuff.
D. Evans (1953-58)
I can’t praise too highly “Fred’s Boys”! The binding and cover photo are excellent and give to the contents their appropriate weight. I suspect that the book could and should be used as a key source of information by a sociological researcher who is looking at the development of private education! A. Philpot. 1954-8
