About the Book
This book is a partial survey of Montana’s wooden grain elevators in the northern tier of the state. Many of these elevators will be gone or demolished within the next 10 - 20 years due to insurance, deferred maintenance or fire. At one time Montana had many wooden grain elevators. Today their numbers and days remaining declines annually. This is a book of black and white photographs of some of these industrial / cultural landmarks on the Montana horizon. They are a cultural, social and commercial feature of daily life for many in Montana. Many towns were known by their elevators and elevator rows. Today many of these legendary former elevator rows have been replaced by new high storage capacity silos and bins leaving the days of the replaced wooden elevators behind.
