About the Book
In Sublight, the experience is what counts. The photographs depict my experiences while sailing from the Canadian Maritimes to the Bahama Banks. These 40 images reflect the spirit I find in the natural world. As a co-founder of Slow Photography, I believe we make our craft more conscious with deliberate practice.
In the book, you'll find ways to practice Slow Photography. These are direct experience, stillness, and an awareness of nature’s cycles. Slow Photography grows to become a mindful, joyful way to think about our creative flow, and one that offers photographers a balanced perspective.
As a boy, I explored the Oregon coast and the Colorado high country with my family. My mother gave me a Kodak Instamatic camera 45 years ago. My father took me into the wilds each summer. Before moving onto a boat, I lived in Kyoto and Stockholm and photographed in Greece, Italy and India. Life changed when we moved to live aboard a catamaran. Surrounded by water and immersed in the seasons, I live and photograph aboard full time now. You will find an index card and recipe for Slow Photography.
Our pace in capturing images has accelerated beyond our ability to convey meaning. To balance this, nothing is more vital for photographers than learning stillness. The book gives examples of Slow Photography that balance to the way we think about our photographic craft. Cultivating our personal awareness is a key intention of thi book. The “how” of our photography is “why” this book exists. You will find two How To index cards for Slow Photography practices at the end of the book. 70 Pages, hardcover, full color.
