About the Book
Professor Jon Michael Schwarting has been practicing and teaching architecture since the beginning of the 70’s. In both, the issue of dwelling has been at the core of his interest. It is a primary human need, from the necessity for shelter and protection to the way we structure our existence in the world. The question regarding the right to a place to dwell has philosophical, social, cultural economic and political significance-meaning- implications. The interest in designing the dwelling for the common man, as opposed to the wealthy- powerful-prominent or élite, was at the root of modern architecture, and as much of that movement has been called into question, hopefully, the moral concern for the dwelling and society survives.
Schwarting hopes that the exhibition and this catalogue serve as an example of the potential in the exploration of issues and possible solutions to one of our most fundamental needs.
