About the Book
I spend a lot of time exploring graveyards. There's stark beauty to be found there along with some fascinating history. In compiling this book, I shot photos in 21 picturesque cemeteries throughout my home region of Northern Pennsylvania and Western New York. I learned much about the symbols carved in tombstones, too. Some, like the fingers pointing skyward, were uplifting while the lambs and fallen doves broke my heart. Equally moving were the statues I encountered. There were stone ladies of sorrow, angels with broken wings, and stalwart firemen and war heroes. I was also struck by how the change of the seasons can add a splash of sunlight, unsettling shadows, or grave clothes of snow. Come wander with me now, and I'll reveal the glory of graveyards. I've seen them as they appear in the ghostly dawn and in the sparkle of a sunny afternoon. . .
