About the Book
SUPER ABSTRACTION Volume I Constructive Readymades
“In place of dreams the future will substitute art based on science and the
technical.” Theo van Doesburg, Art Concret, 1929
One day I was sitting in front of my computer and opened a folder. In this
folder there were around 500 images. Each image consisted of rectangles,
triangles and circles in a pallet of 12 colours, created with an algorithm. At first
sight I thought: these are all different.
I wondered: Can I see which of these “random” generated images looks best?
After staring a couple of hours at my screen I couldn’t pick the best image,
they all looked too much the same.
The following week I started to destroy those same images with other very
basic algorithms. I ended up with a series of frames, ranging from more
complex destructions to the very basic ones. No rectangles, triangles and
circles any more, just blocks, pixels.
Out of these series of over a thousand frames I suddenly saw something
interesting: I could make a selection,
a key moment.
Something familiar boosted my imagination and together with a name
I could transmit an image.
And sometimes, these arrangements could even remain without a name,
a controlled accident.
