About the Book
Newfoundland presents evidence of geological processes occurring 500 million years ago where an ancient ocean, the Iapetus, was closed by continental drift forming the super continent, Pangaea. When Pangaea split apart the Atlantic Ocean was formed to the east of Newfoundland and part of what is now Eurasian/African plates remained behind, now Terra Nova and the Avalon peninsula.
The landscape thus presents ancient geological rock formations, exposed ocean floor sediment, volcanic activity. At the same time the present presents itself with life forms and human settlements(from the age of the Vikings to modern day). The landscape has undergone molding from weather, ocean and life processes.
Photographs of the landscape integrate in the instant (or seconds, minutes) of exposure the ancient rocks, the weathered surfaces, and an over-layer of surface life. In the photographic process millions of years are integrated into a single moment of the present and, because of the print, into the future.
