About the Book
For forty years, Kodachrome film was a trusted companion in my efforts to document precious, privileged moments in my life. I was able to build a library of images that live and speak for themselves, like songs without words. A sunrise on the Ganges River (Varanasi, India; Dec, 1972), a sunset outside Drumoak (Aberdeenshire, Scotland; Jan, 1970) still speak for themselves as does the image of the Tokyo Tower (Tokyo, Japan; Sep, 1968). They possess Stieglitz’s equivalents—images that evoke equivalents to the experiences, thoughts, emotions, sensations I felt at the time the image was made. Publishing books with these images enhanced my indebtedness to Leopold Godowsky and Leopold Mannes, the inventors of Kodachrome.
The following pages present Kodachrome images and some thoughts that grew out of them. As their classmates, friends, and colleagues referred to them as God and Man, I titled this collection Homage to God and Man.
