Set in the 1980s, Quiet Moments is a photographic memoir of one woman’s journey through South Africa’s apartheid past. As a photographer, Lawson’s preoccupations were with ordinary people and ordinary lives, rather than the political iconography for which this era is better known. Five photographic essays include Crown Mines and Working Women, as well as a series of previously unseen street portraits. Lawson’s text describes her awakening from white suburban Durban and her exploration of the cruel land beyond and her place in it.
